YAS Spotlight on Nicolas Oncken


Nicolas Oncken is 14 and has studied violin since the age of 4. His violin teacher is Dr. Kara Eubanks at Willamette Violin Academy in Eugene and he studies music theory at the University of Oregon. Nicolas has been a member of the Armer String Quartet and the Central Oregon Youth Orchestra (COYO), and has attended the Montana Suzuki Institute, American Suzuki Institute, Japan-Seattle Institute, and the Advanced Suzuki Institute at Sanford University.

Winner of the second prize at the Central Oregon Symphony Young Artists Competition in December 2019, Nicolas performed with this orchestra in 2020, at Carnegie Hall with COYO in 2015, and in Minneapolis with the Suzuki Youth Orchestra of the Americas in 2016. He has been a member of the Spotlight Chamber Players of the High Desert Chamber Music Program for the past 3 years. This is Nicolas’ second year to receive a Sunriver Music Festival Young Artists Scholarship award.

Nicolas lives with his family in Sisters and attends Cascades Academy where he has finished 8th grade.
